A technical guide to headless hex socket set screws, truncated cone points, industrial applications, special materials and made-to-drawing CNC manufacturing.

ISO 4027:2026 DIN 914 Cone point CNC machining
Technical summary

A set screw for locking, fastening and positioning

ISO 4027, traditionally associated with DIN 914, is a headless set screw with hex socket drive and a truncated cone point.

Its main function is to lock or position mechanical components such as shafts, pulleys, gears, bushings, couplings, tooling and precision industrial assemblies.

Manufacturing Standard or made to drawing
ISO 4027

What is an ISO 4027 screw?

It is a headless set screw designed to sit inside a threaded hole without protruding from the assembly.

ISO 4027:2026 defines set screws with coarse pitch metric thread, hex socket, truncated cone point and product grade A.

01

Headless

Allows compact and clean fastening inside the component.

02

Hex socket

Allows tightening with a hex key from the inside.

03

Cone point

Concentrates pressure on a localised contact area.

04

Metric thread

Applicable in standardised or custom industrial solutions.

Mechanical function

What is the cone point used for?

The cone point concentrates the tightening force on a reduced surface, helping to achieve firm locking of the component.

This geometry is useful when relative movement between parts must be limited, when working on a shaft or when more localised positioning is required than with a flat point.

Recommended use

  • Prevent movement between components.
  • Lock pulleys, gears or bushings onto shafts.
  • Work in prepared seats designed to receive the point.
  • Achieve greater localised penetration.
  • Improve fastening in assemblies exposed to vibration.
Technical note: the cone point may leave a mark on the contact surface. When this effect needs to be reduced, a flat point solution such as ISO 4026 may be more suitable.
Features

Main features of ISO 4027

The selection of a set screw does not depend only on diameter or length. The point geometry defines how force is transmitted to the part.

Feature ISO 4027
Type Set screw
Drive Hex socket
End Truncated cone point
Head No external head
Thread ISO metric
Product grade A
Traditional reference DIN 914
Dimensions

Common ISO 4027 / DIN 914 sizes

Within the range covered by the standard, multiple coarse pitch metric diameters are used.

The final selection must be made according to the applicable edition of the standard, the material, the required length and the technical documentation of the project.

Thread Coarse metric pitch

M40.70 mm
M50.80 mm
M61.00 mm

Comparison

ISO 4027 vs ISO 4026

Both belong to the family of hex socket set screws, but they mainly differ in the shape of the point.

Feature ISO 4026 ISO 4027
End Flat Truncated cone
Contact Flat surface Localised area
Marking on the part Lower Higher
Penetration Low Greater
Typical use General locking Localised locking
Standard family

ISO 4026, ISO 4027, ISO 4028 and ISO 4029

Each point geometry creates a different behaviour on the component.

ISO 4026 Flat point
ISO 4027 Truncated cone point
ISO 4028 Dog point
ISO 4029 Cup point
Materials

Materials for custom ISO 4027 screws

Material selection must consider mechanical strength, corrosion, temperature and real service conditions.

When a standard commercial solution does not meet the project specifications, CNC machining allows set screws to be manufactured in steels, stainless steels and high-performance alloys.

AREM-CNC manufacturing

CNC manufacturing of custom ISO 4027 screws

Certain applications require set screws with specific dimensions, materials or finishes.

At AREM-CNC, we manufacture special fasteners and components according to standards, technical drawings, physical samples or customer specifications.

Customisable parameters

  • Length and diameter.
  • Material and thread pitch.
  • Specific tolerances.
  • Point geometry.
  • Hex socket depth.
  • Surface finish.
  • Special made-to-drawing features.
Traceability

Technical documentation for demanding sectors

In industrial projects, material traceability can be as important as the geometry or dimensions of the part.

Depending on the project requirements, certificates and documentation may be requested to verify the origin and characteristics of the component.

Custom manufacturing

When should a custom ISO 4027 screw be manufactured?

Made-to-drawing CNC manufacturing is suitable when a commercial part does not meet the real needs of the assembly.

01

Non-standard length

When no commercial size is suitable for the assembly.

02

Specific material

When the environment requires stainless steels, nickel, titanium or special alloys.

03

Corrosion or temperature

When the part must withstand severe service conditions.

04

Tight tolerances

When standard tolerances are not enough for the assembly.

05

Modified geometry

When the point, hex socket or thread must be adapted to the design.

06

Full traceability

When the project requires certificates and technical documentation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about ISO 4027

What is an ISO 4027 screw?

It is a headless set screw with hex socket drive and a truncated cone point, used to lock or position mechanical components.

Are ISO 4027 and DIN 914 equivalent?

DIN 914 is the traditional reference associated with this type of screw. In industrial projects, the standard and edition indicated in the drawing or technical documentation should always be checked.

What is the difference between ISO 4026 and ISO 4027?

ISO 4026 uses a flat point, while ISO 4027 uses a truncated cone point. This difference changes the way the screw transmits pressure to the component.

Can ISO 4027 be manufactured in Inconel or Superduplex?

Yes. CNC machining can be used to manufacture special screws in Inconel, Hastelloy, Duplex, Superduplex, Monel, titanium and other alloys, provided the design is feasible and correctly specified.

What is a cone point set screw used for?

It is mainly used to fasten or position shafts, pulleys, gears, bushings, couplings and other components where localised contact and firm locking are required.
