Technical summary

A nickel-copper alloy for corrosive environments

MONEL® 400, also identified as UNS N04400, is a nickel-copper alloy used when corrosion resistance, good mechanical strength and reliable behaviour in aggressive environments are required.

Its chemical combination makes it especially interesting for marine applications, chemical process equipment, valves, pumps, shafts, special fasteners and machined components where common stainless steels may not provide enough durability.

What is MONEL® 400?

It is a nickel-based alloy with a significant copper content, developed to provide corrosion resistance in media where other materials may degrade quickly.

Unlike many stainless steels, MONEL® 400 does not rely on a high chromium content for its corrosion behaviour. Its nickel-copper base allows it to work in seawater, saline media, reducing environments and certain chemical processes.

01

Nickel-copper base

Technical alloy designed for corrosive environments and demanding industrial applications.

02

Marine environment

Widely used in seawater, naval systems, pumps, valves and coastal components.

03

Good strength

Combines mechanical strength with stable service behaviour.

04

Suitable for shafts, bushings, special fasteners, washers, nuts and CNC components.

Technical properties

Why it is used in difficult environments

MONEL® 400 is selected when the part needs to resist corrosion, seawater, certain chemical media and service conditions where material reliability is critical.

Property Technical advantage
Corrosion resistance Good behaviour in seawater, saline media and certain chemical environments.
Nickel-copper base Metallurgical combination that provides stability and resistance in aggressive media.
Good mechanical strength Allows the manufacture of parts subjected to load, pressure, adjustment or functional wear.
Marine service Interesting for naval, offshore, pump, valve and saltwater system components.
Weldability Can be used in fabricated assemblies, always under a suitable procedure.
Technical machining Requires suitable cutting strategy, cooling and tool control.
Chemical composition

An alloy dominated by nickel and copper

The behaviour of MONEL® 400 is mainly based on its nickel and copper content, with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon and other residual elements.

This composition gives it very interesting resistance against certain corrosive media, while maintaining useful mechanical properties for industrial machined parts.
