Technical overview

A reference alloy against extreme corrosion

HASTELLOY® C276 is used when parts must maintain structural reliability in contact with strong acids, contaminated media, chlorides and highly aggressive industrial environments.

HASTELLOY® C276, also identified as UNS N10276, is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy designed to withstand extremely aggressive chemical environments.

It is one of the most widely used superalloys in the chemical and offshore industries due to its excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.

Its balance of nickel, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten makes it suitable for manufacturing critical components exposed to oxidizing media, reducing media and complex service conditions.

High protection against general corrosion, pitting and crevice corrosion. A technical solution for processes where corrosion failure can compromise safety, production continuity and component service life.
Main chemical composition

Nickel base with chromium, molybdenum and tungsten

Element Approximate content
Nickel, Ni Balance
Chromium, Cr 14.5–16.5%
Molybdenum, Mo 15–17%
Iron, Fe 4–7%
Tungsten, W 3–4.5%
Technical properties

Why choose HASTELLOY® C276

Cr

Resistance to general corrosion

Excellent performance in aggressive chemical environments where stability and durability are required.

Mo

Protection against pitting

High resistance to localized corrosion, especially in the presence of chlorides and contaminated media.

W

Resistance to crevice corrosion

Suitable for critical areas where deposits, joints or complex geometries may appear.

Stress corrosion cracking

Very good performance against stress corrosion cracking under specific service conditions.

Good thermal stability

Typical service temperature up to 1000°C depending on the application, chemical environment and working conditions.

Excellent weldability

Allows manufacturing and joining processes under proper technical control for critical industrial parts.

Industrial applications

Components for chemical, marine and offshore environments

HASTELLOY® C276 is used in sectors where corrosion is a critical risk for safety, production and equipment service life.

Reactors and tanks Chemical equipment exposed to aggressive media and severe process conditions.
Pumps and valves Components in contact with strong acids, chlorides and corrosive media.
Offshore industry Marine applications where localized corrosion can be especially critical.
Desulfurization Industrial equipment exposed to gases, condensates and demanding chemical media.
Heat exchangers Components for heat transfer in chemical plants and industrial processes.
Machining considerations

Demanding superalloy, precise strategy

HASTELLOY® C276 has a high tendency to work-harden, low thermal conductivity and heat generation in the cutting zone.

Without proper process control, tool wear can increase critically and affect tolerances, surface finish and production stability.
1
High-quality carbide tools.
Recommended to maintain stability, precision and tool life during cutting.
2
Stable cutting parameters.
Help control thermal load, surface work-hardening and vibration.
3
Abundant and directed cooling.
Essential to evacuate heat, improve chip control and reduce tool wear.
4
Maximum rigidity in clamping and machine setup.
Key for technical parts with demanding tolerances and complex geometries.
5
Prior process planning.
The strategy must be adapted to geometry, batch size, required finish and final application.
